The
Department of Applied Aquaculture and Zoology is one of the best
departments of Barkatullah University, Bhopal. It runs the courses of M.
Sc. and M. Phil. Zoology and M. F. Sc. Applied Aquaculture. It also
intends to start the course of M. Phil. Fisheries Science from coming
academic session. It conducts Ph. D. programmes in diversified fields viz.
finfish and shellfish biodiversity, ecology, reproductive biology,
endocrinology, neurosecretory system, seed production technology, grow out
trails, nutrition, feed formulation, health management and aquatic
toxicology etc. As yet, the Department has completed 10 international and
national major research projects, produced 32 Ph. Ds. and published about
175 research papers in reputed Indian and foreign research journals. It
has made collaborations with a number of national and international
research institutes for collaborative research. The students are sent to
these institutes for completing their dissertation work. The Department
attracts students from all over the country and thus commands National
status.
The Department has the best qualified faculty for imparting
instructions and practical training to the students. The
Department possesses the largest campus in the University with
impressive aqua cultural infrastructure viz. Chinese hatchery,
Freshwater prawn hatchery, Outdoor and Indoor magur hatcheries,
Artificial pearl culture unit, Aquaria manufacturing and ornamental
fish breeding unit, Roof top rain water harvesting system, Flow
through aquaculture system, Dry bundh, Bangala bundh, Brood stock
tanks, Nursery tanks, Rearing tanks, Stocking tanks etc. The main
activities of the Department, beside teaching, training and
demonstration to the students, are producing finfish and shellfish
seed, its rearing and growing up to marketable size, manufacturing
of aquaria and breeding of ornamental fishes, providing training,
consultancy and services to other institutions! organizations.
Employment avenues are open for the students pursuing their studies
in these disciplines in several areas in the field of animal
science, environmental science, biodiversity, aquaculture and
fisheries Le., training, research, development, extension,
administration and industry; the employing agencies being
traditional universities, fisheries departments of central and state
governments, research institutes, Fisheries corporations and
federations, Co-operative organizations and fast emerging private
industries in seed production, feed formulation, fish processing,
boat building, net manufacturing, and many other ancillaries. The
students receive practical oriented professional training and also
find it easy to self employ themselves.

IN APPLIED AQUACULTURE
This department is an approved research center for conducting Ph.D.
Students can apply for Ph.D. under the registered supervisors of the
department. After taking consent from the chosen supervisor the student
may obtain registration form and ordinance 14 by paying Rs. 3600/- (Non
refundable and likely to be changed). The form and ordinance is available
from the Ph.D. cell/Academic section of the University. Six months after
filling the form the student has to face a Research Degree Committee (RDC)
after which, if approved, he/she will be registered under the supervisor.
Other rules apply according to ordinance 14.
